3 Hacks to Find Your High Income Skill

4 mins read

Have you been thinking about your future financial? Maybe deep inside, you’ve been struggling to find what profession suits best for you and finding what kind of skill that can generate high income.

In this post, we’re going to share you some secrets shared by some successful freelancers to find high income skill that suits you!

Decide What Skills You Want To Sell

There are number of samples of independent professions to be undertaken as self-employed persons. Depends on what profession you will be in, it depends on your interests or background of expertise.

The first step to being self-employed is to decide what profession you want to be in. Here are three criteria in determining the high income skill that suits you:

1. Follow Your Passion.

In the end, you should choose a profession that matches your interests and passions. Interest in the world of the profession has a key role in making you survive it.

A study conducted by Prof Angela Duckworth in her book Grit – The Power of Passion and Perseverance (2016) wrote, passion is one of the key pillars to make you successful in the profession you do.

Therefore, choose a profession that is approximately in accordance with your field of interest.

How Do You Determine What Your Interests Are?

It’s actually quite easy. Just think about what activities make you happy. Or maybe think about what hobbies you like? Your hobby may be an indication of your interest.

For example, if you have a hobby about the ins and outs of the world of online marketing, then you can pursue a profession as an internet marketing expert. If you like playing social media, then there’s nothing wrong with pursuing your skills as a social media marketing expert.

If you have an interest in the world of finance, then you can become a financial consultant. Or if you have a passion for playing online games, maybe you can pursue a profession as a gaming YouTuber.

Or if you have an interest in the world of traveling, then you can also pursue a profession as a travel guide writer.

Check Out Your Work Experience

In addition to hobbies, an indicator to guide you in finding a field that you are passionate about is through your work experience so far (assuming you have also worked).

Through a series of work experience processes that you have gone through, you can identify in which areas that you feel more comfortable and enthusiastic.

For example, from your work experience so far, you feel you have an interest in the world of training and public speaking; or perhaps in the field of Quality Management; or maybe in the world of Marketing. All of this can be the basis for determining the choice of profession that you want to pursue as a self-employed person.

Because going through the learning process and the struggle to be able to become a clear service provider or become a master/expert in your field is not an easy matter. It was a long and tiring journey. If you don’t have a deep passion or interest in your field, then you can easily fall into boredom and then give up halfway.

2. Check If Your Skill Has Potential High Income

This second criterion looks at the market prospects of the profession you want to choose. Does the profession that you are interested in and will be pursuing really has the potential to generate abundant income? Then how about the competitive climate?

The factor about income potential is a crucial element, because we are talking about achieving the dream of financial freedom. If the profession you are pursuing is not paying enough, then it will be a bit heavy too.

Your task is to analyze whether the self-employed profession that you will be pursuing (or which is currently being pursued) does have good income potential, and then what is the level of competition.

3. Experience in The Relevant Field

The third or final criterion in determining the choice of profession you want to pursue is this: have you ever had experience or educational background that is relevant to that field.

Ideally, you have experience and educational background that is relevant to the field of profession you want to pursue. (Nevertheless, this third criterion is not absolute.

For example, if you want to pursue a profession as a business trainer, then ideally you have had work experience in the Training section while working in your old office. Or if you’re enticed by the varied opportunities of a project manager, it would be wise to look at pmp courses.

Likewise, if you want to become a management consultant, ideally you have work experience in that field, or at least have been an internal consultant at the company where you used to work. It would be great if you also had a Master’s degree in Business Management.

Experience in a relevant field will not only help us understand what types of skills need to be honed and applied, but can also learn about the networking aspects of that field – an aspect that is quite important in getting customers.

For example, before becoming self-employed in the field of HR management consulting, I did work in an HR consulting company. Through this experience I learned a lot (learning by doing) about what skills I need to develop to become an expert in that field.

But not only that. This experience allowed me to build networking with clients, and this was very helpful when I later decided to resign and look for my own clients. At least I know what the market map looks like. Not blind at all.

Bottom Line

These are the three criteria that should be considered to find high income skill. The three criteria are:

  1. Profession field according to your interests
  2. The profession field offers high income
  3. The profession field is relevant to your experience and educational background

Based on these three criteria, you can then decide what professional field you will hone your skills in, so that later you can become a master or expert in that field, and then you can generate a tasty and flowing income.
