How to Open a Stubborn Jar

Knock the Lid to Open a Stubborn Jar

Stuck jar? Don’t twist harder, tap the lid first.

When a jar lid feels impossible to open, the problem usually isn’t your grip, but it’s the vacuum seal and friction locking the lid in place.

By tapping the edge of the metal lid against a hard surface, you slightly deform the rim just enough to break the seal. This allows air to enter the jar and reduces the pressure holding the lid tight.

Once the vacuum is released, the resistance drops dramatically, and the lid twists open with far less effort. It’s a simple physics-based fix that works best on vacuum-sealed jars, not a strength test.
