Want to make water freeze in seconds to impress your friends or family? This weird science hack only works when the water gets super cold without freezing first.
Fill a plastic bottle with clean water and place it in the freezer for around 2 hours. Take it out slowly without shaking it. Then slam or tap the bottle firmly on the table. If the water is supercooled, ice will start forming from top to bottom almost instantly.
The Science Behind
This works because the water is colder than its freezing point, but it has not turned into ice yet. When you hit the bottle, the shock creates a starting point for ice crystals to form. Once the first crystals appear, the freezing spreads through the bottle like a chain reaction.
Not every attempt will work. If the water freezes solid in the freezer, it was left too long. If nothing happens, it was not cold enough yet. Cool science, but timing is everything.
